Udyam registration has no document upload, and it is free. A bank loan is a different step with a different list. Many people mix the two. The portal only asks you to type in a few details. A bank or NBFC asks for papers later, if you want a loan, and each lender decides its own list.
Checked on 2 November 2026. The CGTMSE site was read directly. Pages on the Udyam portal would not open for us, so the portal points below come from the portal's own text shown in search results. The lender list comes from bank and NBFC guides, and it changes from bank to bank. Check both before you act.
Step 1: Udyam registration. What you need
You do not upload anything. You type in these details:
| Detail | Who it is for |
|---|---|
| Aadhaar number, with an OTP on the linked mobile | The owner. For a firm or LLP, the partner who signs. For an HUF, the karta |
| PAN | The business. A sole proprietor can use their own PAN |
| GSTIN | Only if GST law makes your business register |
| Bank account number and IFSC | The business |
| NIC code | The kind of work you do. The portal has a search list |
| Business name, type and address | The business |
Registration costs nothing. The official site is udyamregistration.gov.in. No other site is official. If a site asks you for a fee, leave it.
You get your Udyam number and e-certificate when you finish. There is no renewal.
What the portal checks, and what it only asks
This is the part people miss. The portal checks some things for you, and takes your word for others.
The portal checks:
- Aadhaar, with the OTP.
- PAN, against Income Tax records.
- GSTIN, if you enter one.
- Investment and turnover, when you have already filed returns. The portal fetches the figures from Income Tax and GSTN records and shows them on the form.
You type in, and it is your word:
- Business name and address.
- Bank account and IFSC.
- NIC activity code.
- Investment and turnover, if you have no ITR yet.
So the form is short because the portal gets most of the proof from government records, not from you.
Investment and turnover: what if you have no ITR?
A new business has no return to fetch. In that case you declare the figures yourself. This is called a self-declaration.
- Say your plant, machinery or equipment cost is what you paid, without GST.
- Say your turnover is what you expect to earn from your business.
- Once you file your first return, the portal can fetch the figures. As reported, the relief for new businesses ends after 31 March of the year you file that first return.
Write down the real number. The tier you fall in depends on it. Our Udyam checklist shows the limits for micro, small and medium.
Step 2: A bank loan. A different list
Udyam is not a loan. To get a collateral-free loan, you go to a bank or NBFC. Under CGTMSE, the lender gets a government guarantee for your loan. You do not apply to CGTMSE.
How it works:
- You ask a member bank or NBFC for a loan.
- The lender studies your business and decides.
- After the lender sanctions the loan, the lender applies to CGTMSE for the cover.
CGTMSE's site says the cover ceiling is ₹10 crore. That is the top limit. It is not the amount you will get. The lender still decides how much to lend.
What lenders usually ask for
Every lender has its own list. These items show up again and again in lender guides:
| Document | Why they ask |
|---|---|
| Udyam certificate | To show you are a registered MSME |
| PAN and Aadhaar, and address proof | To know who you are |
| GST registration, if you have one | To see your sales |
| Bank statements, often 6 to 12 months | To see money coming in and going out |
| Income tax returns, often the last 1 to 3 years | To see your income |
| Balance sheet and profit and loss account | To see how the business is doing |
| Business plan or project report, for bigger loans | To see how you will repay |
| Shop licence or similar business proof | To show the business is real |
Your bank may ask for less, or for more. Ask for its written list before you apply.
Why the two lists look alike but are not
Both lists have your Aadhaar and PAN, so people think they are the same. They are not.
- Udyam is a registration. It takes minutes, costs nothing, and needs no uploads.
- A loan is a credit decision. The lender wants proof that you can pay back.
Do the first before the second. Udyam gives you the certificate that most lenders want to see. Then gather the bank statements and returns while you wait for the loan.
One more link to keep in mind. The new GST registration circular lists a missing Udyam certificate as something a GST officer should not ask for. Udyam is not a GST document. Read more in GST registration documents after Circular 257.
A short plan
- Open the Udyam checklist and keep your Aadhaar, PAN and bank details ready.
- Register at udyamregistration.gov.in. Never pay for it.
- Download and save your Udyam e-certificate.
- If you want a loan, ask a bank or NBFC for its document list first.
- Collect bank statements, returns and the business plan the lender names.
- If your turnover or investment moves you to a bigger tier, update the portal.
