Professional Tax

Professional Tax in Punjab — Actually the Development Tax

Punjab doesn't call it "professional tax" — it's the Development Tax under a 2018 state Act, but it works the same way: a flat ₹200/month once annual income exceeds ₹2,50,000, deducted by the employer.

Levied asDevelopment Tax (Punjab State Development Tax Act, 2018)
ThresholdAnnual income above ₹2,50,000 (~₹20,834/month)
Rate₹200/month flat
Annual total₹2,400

Punjab is easy to mistake for a state with no professional tax, since it doesn't use that name — the deduction is levied as "Development Tax" under the Punjab State Development Tax Act, 2018, but it functions exactly the same way as professional tax elsewhere: deducted by the employer from salary and deposited with the state.

Unlike most other states' professional tax, which tests a monthly salary threshold, Punjab's Development Tax is defined against annual income exceeding ₹2,50,000 — shown here as its rough monthly-salary equivalent (~₹20,834) for comparability, though the actual legal test is the annual figure.

It's a flat ₹200/month (no graduated tiers) once the threshold is crossed, totalling ₹2,400 a year. Employers must deduct it monthly and deposit it with the state by the 15th of the following month.

Worked example

A standard month works out to ₹200.00. A ₹25,000-a-month salary (₹3,00,000/year) is above the ₹2,50,000 annual threshold: ₹200/month deducted, ₹2,400 for the year. A ₹15,000-a-month salary (₹1,80,000/year) would owe nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Is Punjab's Development Tax legally the same as professional tax?

It's a distinct Act (the Punjab State Development Tax Act, 2018) rather than being called professional tax, but it's deducted the same way, by the same mechanism, and serves the same purpose — most payroll teams treat it as Punjab's equivalent of professional tax.

Why is the threshold based on annual income when this calculator uses a monthly salary?

The Act's actual test is annual income exceeding ₹2,50,000. This calculator divides that by 12 for a rough monthly-salary equivalent (~₹20,834) so it fits the same format as other states, but the legal threshold is the annual figure.

Who deducts and deposits this in Punjab?

Employers deduct it monthly from salary and deposit it with the state by the 15th of the following month. Self-employed individuals and business owners above the threshold pay it directly.
