Check E-Way Bill Rules

On 4 November 2026, GSTN issued Advisory No. 687. It says the e-way bill number will become longer from 1 January 2027. If you only make e-way bills on the portal by hand, this changes very little for you. If your software stores or checks e-way bill numbers, you need to prepare.

The short version

DocumentNumber todayNumber from 1 January 2027
E-way bill number12 digits14 digits
Consolidated e-way bill number10 digits11 digits

What the advisory does not say

The advisory is only about the length of the number. It does not talk about:

Do not assume answers to these. Wait for the portal notes. In particular, we have not seen anything that says old 12-digit bills stay valid or must be made again.

Who needs to act

If you make e-way bills on the portal by hand, you will just see a longer number. Remember to copy all 14 digits when you give it to the driver or the buyer. You can read the steps in our E-Way Bill Helper.

If you use accounting software, ERP or an API, ask your software provider if it will accept the longer numbers, and when.

A simple checklist for software users

The advisory names these four places. Ask your IT person or software provider to check each one:

  1. Applications: screens and reports that show or print the e-way bill number.
  2. APIs: the fields that send and receive the number.
  3. Database: the column that stores it. A 14-digit number is too big for a normal 32-bit number field. Store it as text or as a 64-bit number. Remember that your old records will still have 12-digit numbers.
  4. Validation rules: any check that says "exactly 12 digits". It must allow 14 digits. For the consolidated e-way bill, the new length is 11 digits.

Also check printed formats, QR codes and any link or form that uses the number.

What to do now

  1. Note the date: 1 January 2027.
  2. Tell your software provider about Advisory 687 and ask for their plan.
  3. When the sandbox opens, ask them to test with the new numbers.
  4. If you use the portal by hand, no action is needed now.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the e-way bill number getting longer?

GSTN says so many e-way bills have been made that the current numbering is expected to run out. A longer number gives room for many more bills. Example: a 12-digit number has 12 places, and a 14-digit number has 2 more. Each extra digit makes the number of possible numbers 10 times bigger, so 2 extra digits make it 100 times bigger.

What is a consolidated e-way bill number?

A transporter can combine many e-way bills going in one vehicle into one consolidated e-way bill. It has its own number. That number changes from 10 digits to 11 digits on 1 January 2027. Example: a truck carries 8 consignments with 8 separate e-way bills. The transporter makes one consolidated e-way bill for the whole trip, and it gets the longer 11-digit number.

Do I need to do anything if I make e-way bills on the portal myself?

Not much. You will see a longer number after 1 January 2027. The advisory asks software makers and companies with their own systems to make changes. Example: a small trader who makes e-way bills by hand on the portal only needs to copy the full 14 digits when sharing the number with the driver.

Does this change who needs an e-way bill or how long it is valid?

The advisory does not say so. It talks only about the length of the numbers. It does not mention the value limit, the validity or the steps to make a bill. Example: a consignment worth ₹80,000 that needs an e-way bill today will still need one. Only the number on the bill will be longer.
